Carlos Serra graduated in Medicine at Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa (Lisbon Medical School) in 1990.
From 1992 to 2000 he was Medical Officer in Portuguese army.
He specialized in General Surgery at Hospital Militar Principal and Hospital de São Francisco Xavier in 2000
Between 2001 and 2010 worked as general surgeon at Hospital Prisional de São João de Deus, being responsible for the General Surgery Department from 2006 to 2010.
Since 2002 he works in Hospital dos SAMS, being actually responsible for the endocrine surgery unit , member of the commission of pharmacy and therapeutics and President of the Ethics comitee. During his career he participated in more than 5000 surgeries as surgeon and more than 7000 as surgeon assistant.
He has done training visit periods in Pasadena (USA), Dendermonde (Belgium), Liege (Belgium) and Essen (Germany).
Member of Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia , Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia Minimamente Invasiva and European Society of Endocrine Surgeons.
President of the administration board of Sociedade Portuguesa Interdisciplinar de Laser Médico.
Member of the International Society for fluorescence guided surgery.
Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
Former Coordinator of the Endocrine Surgery Chapter of Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia (2020-2024)
Author of more than 60 oral presentations and 30 scientific works and 2 book chapters
Present in more than 100 courses, congresses and symposiums on General or Endocrine Surgery.

PhD in Medicine completed in 2022 at Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade da Beira Interior (Health sciences faculty of Beira Interior's university) with research project on parathyroid surgery
His main interests beyond endocrine surgery are colorrectal surgery, surgery of malignant melanoma, minimally invasive surgery, radioguided surgery ,image guided surgery and fluorescence guided surgery.
