Alexander Novotny, MD, PhD, MBA, is a German surgeon and academic specializing in general and gastrointestinal surgery. He completed his medical studies at the Universities of Munich and Vienna (1994–2001), including international training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 2003, he earned his doctorate in neurosurgery at LMU Munich under the supervision of Prof. Dr. H.-J. Reulen.
After completing his surgical training at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) under Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. J. Rüdiger Siewert, he obtained board certification in surgery (2007) and further specialization in visceral and advanced visceral surgery (2014, 2016). He qualified as a university lecturer (Habilitation) in surgery in 2009 and was appointed Associate Professor of Surgery at TUM in 2017.
Professionally, he served for over two decades (2001–2023) at the Department of Surgery, TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar, advancing from consultant surgeon to Deputy Director of the Department. Since 2023, he has been Chief of the Department of General, Visceral, and Vascular Surgery at Klinikum Freising GmbH. In addition, he holds an MBA from the University of the People (2017–2021).
His research focuses on the regulation of immune response in postoperative sepsis, multimodal treatment of gastric cancer, and quality assurance in surgical care. Prof. Novotny has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters (PubMed profile). He is an active member of various national and international surgical societies and serves as a delegate of the German Society for Surgery (DGCH) in the Working Group on Hospital and Practice Hygiene of the DGKH.
